Wolf's Head is a large, knife-blade formation located west of Pingora in the Cirque of the Towers. The south face of the mountain is visible from the meadows of the Cirque.
The mountain’s unique name was given by climbing legend Fred Beckey. The inspiration behind the name eludes me. Some say the peak’s profile matches that of the furrowed fur on the head of an angry wolf. Others say the peak’s name comes from the shape of its tallest gendarme when viewed from Shadow Lake. Whatever the circumstance, Wolf’s Head is one of the great peaks of the Wind River Range.
Many routes tread the various faces of Wolf’s Head, yet the most popular is the East Ridge, for its inclusion in the “50 Classic Climbs of North America” book. Notwithstanding this lofty recognition, those who have climbed various routes on Wolf’s Head feel that the higher grade routes on the south face are even better. The mountain is famous for clean cracks and high-quality granite climbing.
