Mitchell Peak is a large, dome-shamed mountain on the east side of Jackass Pass, which lies at the south end of the Cirque of the Towers. This peak is named after Finis Mitchell, who was an avid explorer of the Wind River Range and published a hiking guide of the area in 1976.
The west and south faces of Mitchell Peak are composed of rocky slopes that provide good terrain for easy scrambles to the summit. The north face is a sheer slab of clean granite, which includes the northwest buttress where the best climbing resides.
Mitchell Peak is a great weekend mountain to get a break from more crowded area of the Cirque; it also offers a stunning view of the Cirque and the south Wind River Range.
