Rock Canyon is located on the east side of Utah Valley, near the base of Provo Peak. This canyon is an impressive slice in the large foothills that lead to the Provo Peak Cirque. Rock canyon is split into three sections, a 10 minute hike separates each section. The lower section is quartzite rock with mostly sport climbs and a few trad. The middle and upper sections are limestone rock with an equal number of sport and trad climbs.
Summer weekends in Rock Canyon are similar to those in American Fork Canyon—they are crowded. In American Fork Canyon, the road travels the length of canyon providing easy access to most climbs. The pleasant characteristic of Rock Canyon is there is no road, just a trail. Once you hike past the lower section of the canyon, you're likely to be alone, with hundreds of climbs at your disposal.
The climbing routes in this canyon are detailed in a book titled "Climber's Guide to American Fork Canyon and Rock Canyon" by Stuart and Bret Ruckman. You can find this book on Amazon.com or at any local climbing store.
