Glen Canyon is located in south-central Utah, on the Utah/Arizona border. The canyon encompasses 1.3 million acres of recreational wilderness. Glen Canyon's most famous asset is Lake Powell.

In 1963, the Glen Canyon Dam was completed, backing up the Colorado River for nearly 200 miles. This enormous lake has more shoreline than the West Coast of the United States. In addition to water supply and electricity, Lake Powell is used as a recreation area for boating, camping, and exploring. Lake Powell remains a controversial development. Supporters site the recreational opportunities and the critical water supply for development in the Southwestern United States. Opponents site the ecological and archeological destruction of the natural canyon.

Although the most visited regions of Glen Canyon lie within the borders of Lake Powell, Glen Canyon stretches beyond Lake Powell, including remote slot canyons and desert terrain. Prepare and plan well for travel in Glen Canyon.
