Lockett Meadow is the final basin of an ancient volcanic runout. It lies at the east end of the San Francisco Peak Wilderness. This area can be accessed by 4-wheel drive vehicles on a moderately-maintained dirt road. At Lockett Meadow there is a designated, forest service campsite, and the trailhead to the Inner Basin Trail. There is a great ski tour that begins at Lockett Meadow and traverses all six peaks in a circle.
Spanish explorers called this area "Sierra Sin Agua", meaning mountain without water. At the latter part of summer, this can be true, but the Lockett Meadow/Inner Basin areas have several large springs. Flagstaff Spring flows approximately one million gallons a day in good years. The city of Flagstaff gets as much as three million gallons of water a day from the Lockett Meadow/Inner Basin areas.
